Barn Conversions

The Barn may only be the starting point of the project, but it is our responsibility to ensure each stage of the construction process is sympathetic to it. The Barn may impose restrictions on your design but we will not. From our expertise and knowledge we can help clients to find a solution to those restrictions. We are masters at combining the historic soul of the Barn with a contemporary twist.

The traditional skills of our Craftsmen, gained over decades of experience, give them the broad range of skills they require to ensure perfect fusion between the old and the new.

The construction process can be a very interesting journey, quite often unveiling some of the history of the Barn. We create a photographic documentary of each project - our Project Album - which we share with our clients and architects upon completion

Featured Project: Caswell House Barns

This project involved the  conversion  of a 14th Century listed Barn to a wedding/conference venue. The original Stonesfield slates were stripped from the roof and reused during the re-roofing with shortfalls made up with salvaged slates. New arrowslits were formed using salvaged stone. Extensive re-pointing of existing stonework was meticulously undertaken. The original oak trusses were restored and only renewed where necessary. The internal design and decoration was sympathetic to the history of the building , retaining many of the original features. The electrical specification for this project was very detailed with an integrated PA system, and mood lighting to ensure the ambience of the building was maintained. A professional stainless steel kitchen was also installed.

The design also incorporated an ecological wood pellet burner, a truly renewable energy source which significantly lowers the carbon footprint of the property.

Our clients on this project have nominated Sporn Construction for the Master Builder of the Year Award 2010. The final judging will take place later in the year. Our clients previously nominated Sporn Construction in Category 6 (Commercial) of the Master Builder of the Year Awards 2006 in relation to the conversion and renovation of "The Coach House". The Federation of Master Builder judges agreed with our clients and placed us as regional winners(Southern Counties) in this category.
